One Way

Date : April 13 2002
Venue : Dumbarton St Michaels
Support : Silver Lining Smash / Bruce 13

Me and a couple of members of our massive, made it to the venue at about quarter to eight, in a fashionably late entrance, allways a good thing! The venue, which I had never been in before, was absoloutely huge, must've been able to pack about eight hundred in there! But, tonight, there's only about a third of that tops here, and at first were all spaced out.

Almost as soon as we were in, localers Bruce 13, and a late addition to the bill, because other localers 7 Skinner Cone, were unable to play due to lack of practise, were prowling the stage, to set up their gear, and opened their set with a sort of Creed-esque song, which started people bopping their heads and tapping their feet. After another one of their own songs, and the pit forming, and everyone moving forward, they played an exceptionally good cover of the Foo Fighters' 'Breakout'. The crowd was becoming really good, and with the pit at the side going, all the people involved were falling over chairs, and each other! The rest of their set consisted of covers, first off with Deftones' 'Be Quiet And Drive', and then Oasis' 'Morning Glory', which for an indie song, got one of the best pit of the night, believe it or not! Then they finnished off with another Deftones cover, 'My Own Summer, Shove It', with their roadie singing, and he was really good at the whole Chino Moreno thing, only this guys extreme shouting was far better than Chinos. This band, should, evolve out of Dumbarton soon, it's just all about being in the right place at the right time, to be noticed by the right people, innit? The only bad thing was, the lack of stage energy, but the immense pit made up for it towards the end.

Immediately after they were done, Silver Lining Smash, walked onstage to a great reaction from the audience, but with No Matty! (the singer). The rest of the band were just mucking about onstage, doing little improvs, showing off and whatever, when they finally played a song, and to everyone's surprise, Matty walked out. The song was their own one, and it was a happy, bouncy around, pop-punk song, which, somehow, didn't get any crowd movement at all. It wasn't untill their next song, a cover of Britney Spears' 'Crazy', which didn't really get such a 'crazy' reaction, but was a good sing a long number. Thankfully though, we all realised we were being daft just standing about, and when they played their next song, the whole crowd was going absoloutely wild! I had never been in such a good crowd! And this was in bloody Dumbarton, highly known for it's 'atmosphere'! Their set continued with both, crowd mentallity, and a good mixture of styles in their songs, the most classic being, the ever so well lyric'd 'In The Park', a song about masturbating in the park, whilst watching a woman getting naked with her blinds open...it's quite legendary and it only lasts about a minute. Another highlight, song wise, was 'Padlock Pants', a pretty much generic pop-punk tune, and I was in English, sitting beside Matty when he wrote it! At some point during their last couple of songs, we had a stage diver, which was pretty cool, because we all had to huddle together or he'd of been dropped quite badly off the high stage. Looking back to the bar, you can see two old women, looking in horror at the pit, which was quite funny! By the end of their set, Silver Lining Smash had impressed a lot of people in the crowd, this was shown by the fact that half of them left because they didn't want to see One Way, and it was the biggest mistake of their life to miss One Way!

It took One Way a bit of farting about to set up, then they came on, and showed, that they know how to open a show, with their high-speed pop-punk style of beats. Now that the crowd was reduced slightly, the pit wasn't as good, although was still fantastic, because it was pretty much just me and my friends in a big open space, which was cool. Their set continued with mainly covers, such as Blink 182's 'FIrst Date', which went down incredibly well, and then a cover of a cover, in the form of New Found Glory's version of Celiene Dion classic, 'My Heart Will Go On', and New Found Glory's smash hit 'Hit Or Miss', both great sing a long numbers. After them, they played a couple more of their own songs, which I had been told about, first up was the very well titled 'Kill The Panda', and then 'Win The Lotto', neither of which dissapointed me. At this point of the show, we were informed by a mate that the Castlehill Young Team was outside! So we decided to go out and look for our lift home, but I could still hear the last of the show, they rounded up with another Blink 182 cover - 'Dammit, and then another cover of a cover to finnish off (what I heard before I left), this time it was a cover of Spunge's version of Bob Marleys infamous 'No Woman No Cry', which they performed perfect from the first note. These guys are definetly going somewhere, i'd be willing to bet money on that - they have a great style of music, and as far as being in a band goes, they play like they were made to be in a band together. Watch out for them!

This gig was a really good idea, to help get the word more widespread about the Alt-Scene in the area, because that's the one thing it needs, and I hope to god there's plenty more gigs like this in the pipeline!
