B-Movie Heroes

Date : February 23rd 2002
Venue :
Glasgow 13th Note
Support : The Cherrykicks / The Alpacinos / Eight Page Pullout

Having been to quite a few gigs by now, this was without doubt the lowest key one ever! The 13th Note is situated in the kind of place that I thought no-one would've wandered down to too check out a couple of bands. So after getting into the bar area of the venue, and speaking to a few of the band members, we finally got let into the actual venue bit and it was time for an evening with some of the best bands that the UK has to offer.

First up tonight was Glasgow's very own Eight Page Pullout. The first thing, after hearing Eight Page Pullout, that anyone would notice, is that they make their influences as far as music go, very obvious, playing a style of music that is very similair to the likes of Green Day, crossed over with the singing style of Jordan Pundik (from New Found Glory), which overall, produces a really good blend of energetic pop-punk, Glasgow style! They open up their set with an instrumental track, and then play a song which is old-New Found Glory esque. As the set continued, the songs were keeping up the energetic vibe from the band, and their stage energy was slowly increasing, with occaisonal jumping-in-unison outbursts from the three front men of the band. The whole set is made up of songs from their debut release 'It's All Relevant', which I own and I would review..but only the first song on it works...maybe it's my cd player, but it was only a quid anyway, worth it for something that says it has 10 songs on it. Sorry I don't know any song titles or whatever, they may have told us I just can't remember! By the end of their set, the currently small audience seemed to like what they heard, as did I, and if these guys aren't huge one day, i'll be very surprised.

Next up - the funniest band in Scotland. They sound like Strung-Out, with better guitarists and vocals, and with that little dab of Scottishness to their music...guessed yet? who else but, The ALpacinos. They started off with 'Toni Montana', and continued on with songs from 'Bullfighting In Arbroath', their mini album, jam packed with Scottish punk-rock, and a top quality release. One of the highlights of the whole night was when Eddy Alpacino, the front man, got into a bit of bantar with a group of guys from the slowly building crowd, which was incredibly funny, and they were joking a lot between songs, and talking to the crowd a lot, showing that as one of their strong points, the other being able to play fucking great music. Looking at the ALpacinos, you would think they were in a really brutal UKHC band or something, but when they play, you realise that your eyes have decieved you, especially with singer Eddy, as he has a really powerful voice, which you wouldnt expect from someone with such a Scottish accent, they are definetley a band worth checking out!

Rocking the 13th Note next, was Glasgows very own rock and roll blokes, The Cherrykicks. Before the Cherrykicks were on, you could see the crowd building up slowly, showing that most of the crowd were there to see them. And despite Dave (the singers) sore throat (which he pulled through very well with) they were absoloutely fantastic. The songs they played were mainly from their Demo, including 'High Times', 'Waste It', and 'Mind Over Matter', all of which give off the Cherrykicks distinctive sound of Rock and Roll, crossed over with a little bit of jaggy punk, with razor sharp vocals thrown in as well. They also gave us a sneak preview of their latest track 'Buckfast' due to be released on a Five Miles High* compilation soon, and it sounded very good. The Cherrykicks onstage, have the energy of a big fuck off bottle of Lucozade, and are both confident, and talkative, which is always a good thing in a band.

I'll be perfectly honest here, I never seen much of B-MH because me and my friend were interviewing Dave Cherrykick, and that took longer than we expected, so I only caught the first song, and the last couple, both of which sounded very similair to the Cherrykicks sort of style, with a bit of pop-punk thrown in with it all. I'll check them out fully next time.

Overall, a great gig, from some of the best bands that Britain has to offer right now. Hopefully plenty more where that one came from!
